CAITHNESS will decide who it wants to make its voice heard in the Highland Council when voters go to the polls.

The local authority elections will take place on Thursday, May 3, when across the region 170 candidates will be contesting the 80 seats.

In Caithness, there are 20 candidates seeking election to the 10 seats in the county’s three wards.

Four will be elected to represent Landward Caithness, with three each in Thurso and Wick.

There will be at least two new councillors from the Far North after Landward councillor David Flear and Thurso councillor Marion Thurso announced they would not be standing for re-election.

Eight candidates are in the running in Landward Caithness, with seven seeking election in Thurso and five in Wick.

The voting system being used is the single transferable vote (STV). When filling in their ballot papers, voters must put numbers against the names of candidates in order of choice – using 1, 2, 3 and not a cross.

Voters can make as many or as few choices as they wish and they don’t have to number every candidate. As long as the voter numbers at least one candidate, his or her vote will be counted.

If you make a mistake on your ballot paper, you can ask for a new one.

The count of all votes cast in the Highland Council area will take place at Inverness Leisure, Bught Lane, Inverness, on Friday, May 4.

  • North of Scotland Newspapers contacted all 20 Caithness candidates inviting them to supply a personal statement to use as a basis for our council election profiles. Richard White, standing as a Scottish Conservative and Unionist for the Landward Caithness ward, did not respond to our request.
