TV duo head to John O'Groats in quest for antique treasures
John O'Groats features prominently in a new edition of the BBC TV series Antiques Road Trip as the quest for collectables reaches Caithness and Sutherland.
Co-presenters Roo Irvine and Mark Hill stop off at Dornoch, Brora and Helmsdale in their 1970s Triumph car, picking up a few rarities along the way in the hope of making a profit at auction later in the programme.
At John O'Groats they visit Turning Tides, the antiquities and collectables shop, and Roo also meets local businessman Walter Mowat, chairman of John O'Groats Development Trust, to find out about the area.
Viewers see Walter showing Roo the Duncansby Stacks and the end-of-the-road signpost and telling her about the Naylor brothers, who were 19th-century pioneers of the walking route between John O'Groats and Land's End.
The show was filmed during the spring.
Walter said this week: "It was nice to see that they had come to John O'Groats and had taken an interest in what's available here – including the cliffs and the signpost and the story of the early walks between John O'Groats and Land's End."

Earlier in the episode, Mark visits the Strath of Kildonan to find out about the Sutherland Clearances and calls in at the Timespan centre in Helmsdale. Their first stop is at Poolewe in Wester Ross.
Items purchased by the pair during their travels around the north Highlands range from a set of whisky glasses in a leather case to a 1950s Bakelite TV.
The episode was broadcast on BBC One on Thursday, October 6 (series 25, episode 19), and is available on the BBC iPlayer.
