Trishaw tours of Wick and Thurso lights bring festive joy
Care home residents and others in the community are enjoying evening tours of the Christmas lights in Wick and Thurso – as passengers in three-wheeled bikes.
The outings are laid on by local volunteers from Cycling Without Age, a worldwide movement that seeks to give elderly and disabled people access to the outdoors through trishaw rides.
The volunteers add to the festive atmosphere by wearing Santa hats or even a full Santa suit.
The trishaw is accompanied by an outrider on a bike and all trips are weather-dependent.
George Ewing, captain of the Wick chapter of Cycling Without Age, said: “It’s always nice to be nice.

“It’s really rewarding and brings a feeling of joy to all involved, especially when you’re in a position to help bring a smile to those less able than you.
“Cycling Without Age chapters in Wick and Thurso are trying to do exactly that at this time of year by taking folk out and about on their trishaws to view the tremendous displays of festive lights put on by other voluntary groups and individuals in our home towns.
“Once again we would like to thank other road users for being courteous and patient.”
George added: “As our name suggests, this is Cycling Without Age – so if you or a loved one is unable to cycle due to a disability or age, no matter if you’re nine or 99, we would like to help you get the wind in your hair and enjoy that feeling of being on a bike.
“Both chapters in Wick and Thurso are always looking for volunteers to ensure that we get as many smiles for the miles that we do all year round. All training is done locally and is free.”
Anyone interested in getting involved can contact George on 07766 516524.
The Wick chapter began offering trishaw rides in 2021.
The Thurso chapter of Cycling Without Age got under way earlier this year, with Kevin Oag as captain.
