A FAMILY of travelling people pitched up next to Wick River on Tuesday evening, despite the fact a camping site sits on the opposite bank.

The family were said to have been moved on from their initial pitch on the parade ground of the forthcoming County Show and settled at a site further up the river. On Tuesday evening, children were seen fishing in the river while the adults sat around a camp fire.

The family are believed to be all from the Glasgow area with one of their vans carrying information about gardening work and tree surgery. The encampment – consisting of two work-vans, a motorhome and a large tent – was reported to Highland Council on Wednesday morning. Police Scotland said it was not involved.

The area they settled in was, ironically, directly opposite the Wick Caravan and Camping Site which has all the necessary amenities to accommodate an overnight stay.

On Thursday a Highland Council spokesperson said: "The encampment was reported to the housing team yesterday morning but when an officer visited at 10.30am they had gone."

The remains of the camp fire, containing charred cans and plastic, will be cleared up by a council team.
