NORTH MSP Mary Scanlon has welcomed a response she received from Scottish transport minister Keith Brown on plans to improve the Berriedale Braes.

She is encouraged by the reply from Mr Brown who told her that section of the A9 could be upgraded at a cost of £2.3 million.

The Highlands and Islands Conservative MSP described the Berriedale Braes as “an accident black spot”.

She said the hazardous series of bends are difficult enough for regular road users to negotiate, “let alone visitors to the area”.

She said: “While budgets are always going to determine if projects will go ahead or not, I would hope the Scottish Government will look favourably on improvements, which would make a huge difference to hauliers, general road users and visitors to the Far North.”

Mrs Scanlon added: “I welcome the fact that geotechnical studies have taken place at this site and they are favourable for either road widening or realignment. I hope the Scottish Government will now commission the further ground investigations and topographic survey which will allow work to start in early course when budgets become available.

“There is no doubt improvements to the Berriedale Braes will be a boost to the North Highlands and people who live there.”
