A TEAM of volunteers from the John I’Groats Trail (JOGT) walking route have been busy putting route markers through Wick.

The striking white markers with their octagonal design now guide walkers along a route through the town chosen by the Wick Paths Group – an organisation set up to develop the path network so that visitors and local people alike can enjoy the scenery, natural heritage and history of Wick.

Jim Bunting, the JOGT ranger, said: “The John O’Groats Trail stretches from Inverness all the way to John O’Groats, with Wick being the second largest settlement it passes through, making it a key staging post on the route."

The route follows the coastline by the old coastguard station and passes the Pilot House, giving excellent views of the harbour, before dropping down to the old fish market.

Heading up past Wick Heritage Museum, it then returns to the river to cross the Bridge of Wick, along Bridge Street, and then heads out of town via the north shore path.

The group made sure that it passed as many points of interest as possible while not diverting from the main route too much.

Jim said: "Volunteers and Friends of the John O’Groats Trail came along to help put up the signs in what turned out to be a lovely day to be out in Wick."

On behalf of the trail group he sent out a thanks to Highland Council and the Wick Harbour Authority for permission to install the signs.
