A CAITHNESS man was killed when he was involved in a head-on vehicle collision.

The 47-year-old man, who has yet to be named by police, was a passenger in a Peugeot car which crashed into a camper van at Weydale, one mile south of Thurso at 7pm on Tuesday.

Two teams of firefighters from Thurso and one from Wick were called to the scene where they used cutting equipment to free the passenger from the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and passengers in the camper van were believed to be tourists. They were uninjured but were treated at the scene for shock.

The road was closed for several hours last night as traffic was diverted via Halkirk.

Officers from Northern Constabulary’s road policing unit are currently carrying out inquiries into the crash and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either of the vehicles on the road is asked to contact the Road Policing Unit on 01349 869 566 or 01463 715555
