A memorial tractor run looks set to make an impressive sight as it makes it way through Caithness this weekend as a mark of respect for three local men.

Organised by the Caithness Vintage Tractor and Machinery Club, Saturday's event is being held in memory of Robert Farquhar, George Dunnett and George Mackay who all had an association with the group.

The run will set off at 10am from West Greenland Farm, by kind permission of Andrew Mackay and family, covering a large area of Caithness and passing the homes of the three men it is in memory of as well as Ruthers of Lyth, the home of Ernest McAdie who the club paid tribute to in their road trip last year.

Club chairman Robbie Streight said: "They were all valued members of the club. Robert was our treasurer for 17 years and never missed an event – the cornerstone of the club for so many years. George Dunnett organised many trips for us and Geordie Mackay enjoyed the ploughing matches and gave a lot of advice."

He explained that a collection would be taken on the day with the proceeds split between the charities chosen by the Farquhar and Dunnett families.

The chairman added: "The run is open to anyone who wants to take part, regardless of the age of the tractor. Last year we had 48 tractors at Ernest's run – I would expect hopefully in the area of 30 tractors plus this time."

First the drivers will head towards Wester, and over Skitten towards Standstill passing the home of Mr Farquhar who took on the role of treasurer when the club was established back in 2004. The tractors will then follow a route down past Quoybrae and on through Gillock and Stemster before a break for refreshments at the halfway point at Sibster Farm, Georgemas, by kind permission of the Dunnett family.

After lunch the drivers will head to Spittal then back through Westerdale, passing Mr Mackay's home at Benachie, following a route to Halkirk and on through Thurso before returning to Greenland.

Those taking part will start assembling at West Greenland at 9am, with the slowest tractor probably heading out first – last time this was the job of George Williamson from Dixonfield with his war era John Deere which made a spectacular sight.

The last run, the largest the club has had, proved popular with young farmers and over £1500 was raised for RSABI which provides practical, emotional and financial support to all people involved in the Scottish agricultural industry.

All tractors taking part must be in a road worthy state and can be left at West Greenland the day before the event. Those wishing to join in should contact the club, messages can be left on the Facebook page.
