A 36-YEAR-OLD man has appeared in court charged with setting fire to a cellar and objects in Ackergill Tower.

Brendan McNamara confirmed his plea of not guilty when he appeared on indictment at Wick Sheriff Court today (Friday).

The Edinburgh man is alleged to have wilfully set fire to a cellar in the tower, a painting, a carpet and a quantity of paper. The charge continues that the fire took effect and caused extensive damage to the cellar and contents and caused further smoke and fire damage throughout the building.

McNamara is said to have committed the offence, which is alleged to have happened on January 5, 2014, along with somebody else.

McNamara will face a sheriff and jury trial on June 5. His bail was continued.
