Malcolm McEwan (18), from Lairg, won the Modern Apprentice category; John Weir (32), from Newtonmore, the National Certificate category; and Shamus Nairn (21), from Ullapool, the Higher National Certificate category.

NHC runs three courses in gamekeeping and wildlife management: Modern Apprenticeship SVQ level 2; National Certificate; and HNC gamekeeping with wildlife management. All the courses give the trainees/students a placement on a sporting estate, while they also have short stints of study at the college’s main campus in Thurso.

The award ceremony was sponsored by the Scottish Gamekeepers Association, Swarovski and the British Association Shooting Conservation.
