SEVENTEEN-year-old Katie-Rose MacDonald has been awarded the lord-lieutenant’s cadet award.

Anne Dunnett, lord-lieutenant for Caithness, attended a meeting of the Castletown detachment of the 1st Battalion the Highlanders Army Cadet Force and presented the young cadet sergeant with the honour.

It is presented each year to one cadet from the three cadet services – sea, army and air – in Caithness and gives the cadet the honour of being the lord-lieutenant’s assistant when performing public duties.

Katie-Rose is the second in her family to receive this award, following in the footsteps of her older brother Alan.

Castletown detachment commander Captain Stephen Mezals said: "Katie-Rose is an extremely valued and well-respected member of the detachment and she should be proud of all her achievements in the Army Cadet Force. I’m delighted that her commitment and dedication to the cadet service has been recognised and I can’t think of a more deserving cadet for this award."

For more information about joining the cadets – for ages 12 to 18 – visit www.armycadets.com or call 01847 893868.
