IT’S not a sight twin brothers Hugh and Sutherland Mowat expected to see when they woke up first thing in the morning.

A giant owl was found sitting on its branch at their home in Newton Road in Wick on Friday where it was believed to have been all night. The retired 65-year-olds, who used to own Northern Hardware in Thurso, said they’ve never seen an owl like it before and due to its tame nature believe it may have escaped from a bird sanctuary.

They are now appealing to the public to help them identify what breed of owl it is and if it has escaped from someone’s home or sanctuary.

“We have lived here for 40 years but this is the first time we’ve ever seen an owl like this in our garden – it is very unusual to see owls in the day time,” said Sutherland.

“We usually have doves that nest in the tree which we feed, but due to its tameness and that it is out during daylight, we are wondering if it has escaped from somewhere,” said Hugh.
