A GROUP of friends from Thurso who hiked 20 miles when their organised event was washed out have raised more than £6000 for charity.

The women – Moira McBeath, Lynda Moran, Alice Fidler, Julie Mackay, Karen Hanna,Trish Hutcheon and Carol Rosie – have all seen friends and relatives struck by cancer and decided to sign up and take part in last year's Rob Roy Mighty Hike in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The walk consists of 26.2 miles of mixed terrain and starts at Callander and follows the Rob Roy Way through the Trossachs National Park, finishing at Killin. Unfortunately the event was cancelled at the eleventh hour due to freak weather which washed out most of the track. Keen not to let all their training go to waste, the ladies found an alternative route and walked 20 miles on their own to mark the occasion.

They supplemented this effort with other fundraising activities throughout the year, including car-boot sales, lucky squares and Macmillan's World's Big Coffee Morning, and, along with donations, collected £6463.73 for Macmillan UK and Macmillan Highland.

However, they feel they have some unfinished business at the Rob Roy Way, so Moira, Alice, Julie, Tricia and Lynda have signed up again for this year's event, and they are hoping the weather will be a bit kinder this time round.
