A new art exhibition giving an insight into the mental health and wellbeing of young people in Thurso has opened at the North Coast Visitor Centre.

Thurso Youth Art Project involves young people from Thurso High School working with Caithness-based artists Lisa Poulsen, Caron Cumming and Aimee Lockwood to express their thoughts and feelings through a range of artwork, including drawing, photography, printing, sculpture and film.

The collaborative project has been facilitated by High Life Highland’s youth development team and funded by the Highland Council’s Community Regeneration Fund. Working closely with the guidance team at Thurso High School, the youth team aims to increase the resilience of young people in Thurso – many of whom face complex and multiple challenges in their lives.

The exhibition opened on Saturday, March 2 and will run until Saturday, March 16. At a special viewing for the young people and invited guests, HLH youth development officer, Jill Innes, said: "Huge thanks go to the fab artists that helped our young people create their artworks by facilitating and embracing their ideas, and encouraging their individuality.

"A big thank you also to the staff at the North Coast Visitor Centre who are hosting our exhibition in their beautiful gallery and have put in some huge graft during the installation, which is in itself a work of art!

"This project has been funded by the Highland Council Community Regeneration Fund – without which, it would not have been possible. This financial support is so important in creating opportunities for young people in Thurso. It has rekindled for some an early childhood interest in drawing, and for others it has given a confidence in their abilities that they didn’t know they had."
