REDUCING her carbon footprint in an adventurous way, a local woman left her car at home to raise money for charity.

Donna Swanson (24) decided to walk to her classroom at Wick High School on Monday.

But it was no ordinary journey for the auxiliary teacher of deaf pupils, as her house is in Thurso.

Donna decided to take part in the extraordinary "feet" to help raise money for Cancer Research UK.

She left at 3am, while it was still dark, to begin her 22-mile walk. She was accompanied on her journey by Lorraine Keith, who walked her to Haster, and Lorette Mackay, who walked a few miles outside of Watten.

Thurso’s Comm bar manager, Scott Youngson, and Top Joe’s manager Scott Shearer drove a vehicle behind to make sure they stayed safe.

Donna said it was the first time she had ever taken part in anything like it.

"I don’t usually do much exercise and hardly ever go to the gym!" she said. "The furthest I usually walk is from my house to my car. However, it was something that I really enjoyed doing and I was on a high for the rest of the day.

"My shins were a bit sore afterwards but it was totally worth it."

Wearing a pink fluorescent jacket in tribute to Relay for Life, Donna took over six hours to compete the walk.

She arrived at the school to a hero’s welcome, being met by pupils and staff with congratulatory banners.

Over £700 was raised through donations at the school and from supporters in Thurso.

She taught her classes during the school day before hitching a lift home.

Donna will be one of 15 members of staff at Wick High School who will be taking part in the Caithness Relay for Life at Sir George’s Park in Thurso on Saturday, August 27.
