Tonight sees the return of The Highland Vet with a brand-new series following the work of the Thurso veterinary team at DS McGregors and Partners – the most northern mainland veterinary practice in Britain.

Filmed locally from spring through to summer, the award-winning show has smashed viewing figure records for Channel 5’s 5Select.

In the opening episode of the new series, practice director Guy Gordon has a tough case on his hands, when a much loved, seriously ill Labrador needs emergency surgery and a life-saving blood transfusion. The blood donor is his life long canine companion.

Newly qualified vet Katie Reiss performs an emergency caesarean on a cow that’s struggling to deliver her calf. It’s a tense time for this young, local vet who’s only done this operation twice before.

Equine vet Tom Southall has his work cut out for him when he has to do some serious dental surgery on a horse that towers over him. Ronnie the Clydesdale has developed a cyst the size of an apple in his mouth which Tom needs to lance and drain – but this 16 hand high horse is not a fan of the dentist.

It’s double trouble for vet Fiona Sutherland when a concerned owner brings in two of her poorly pets. Mira – an old blind cat that’s struggling to empty her bladder, and Edgy, the chicken who’s laid a less than golden egg.

The first episode can be seen tonight on 5Select at 9pm.
