Police concerned about how a van was being driven traced it in Thurso in the early hours of the morning.

Officers observed four men leaving the vehicle. They spoke to Oliver Henderson, the registered keeper of the van but he failed to identify who had been at the wheel, Wick Sheriff Court heard on Tuesday.

Henderson (33) pleaded guilty to the offence which occurred on December 11, 2022 and was fined £300. He also incurred six penalty points.

Solicitor George Mathers said that Henderson, of Ormlie Hill, Thurso, a first offender, was a self-employed roofer covering a Scotland-wide area. His driving licence was "absolutely essential" for his work he told the court.

Sheriff Neil Wilson said that Henderson knew who had been driving his van although the court heard that he had told the police he had "absolutely no idea".

The sheriff added that he was not minded to impose disqualification.
