A THURSO mum is making an eleventh-hour appeal to raise cash which could help bring home a critically ill British teacher stranded in Singapore.

Claire Hughes persuaded her partner to enter a van competition run by Mercedes-Benz. Upon reaching the short list the couple decided that if they can gather enough support to win the van they will donate it to Thurso businessman Mark Taylor.

Mark’s brother, Matthew, was teaching in Bali when he was involved in a motorbike accident. As he did not have travel insurance, the subsequent hospital bill has been running to many thousands of pounds a week.

“It’s going to make such a huge difference to his family,” said Claire. “The amount that Matthew’s hospital bills are costing is just crippling and they have got enough stress as it is with him being ill without all these money worries as well.

“Personally if it was one of my kids sitting in the hospital bed and I had money worries on top of that I just don’t know how I would cope.”

The donated van would be sold by Mark and his family in order to raise the money needed for Matthew’s ongoing treatment and to get an air ambulance to fly him home, estimated to cost over £70,000.

Voting can be accessed by using a Facebook account on the “Help for Matthew Taylor” Facebook page.

“It’s really simple to do,” added Claire. “Now that we’ve got a more direct link it only takes about 30 seconds to vote.”

Claire’s entry is the last one on the page, entitled “Mr Wayne Gunn”. The competition closes at midnight tonight.
