The Rotary Club of Thurso's scarecrow guy competition will run until November 5, with cash prizes for the best entries and a charity donation.

People in Thurso and surrounding communities are being invited to create a scarecrow guy with a chance to win cash prizes while also raising money for charity.

The challenge has been set by the Rotary Club of Thurso as an alternative to its annual fireworks display, which cannot go ahead this year because of the Covid-19 restrictions.

Rotary's Paul Hagan said: "We are sad to announce that we are unable to present a public fireworks display this year due to coronavirus. Like all other events in our calendar which have been lost to the virus, it will be greatly missed."

Instead, members of the public are being asked to take part in the scarecrow guy competition which will run until November 5. There are cash prizes for the best entries and the club will donate an additional £100 to the charity of the winner’s choice.

Entry to the competition is free to all ages. Details can be found on the Thurso Rotary website or Facebook page, or by contacting a club member.

Entrants must build a scarecrow guy from scratch, and take a clear photo of it at an identifiable location within 10 miles of Thurso.

The photo must be emailed no later than 6pm on November 5, along with contact details (and age if under 16), to thursorotaryguycompetition@outlook.com

Each scarecrow guy must be at least 100cm in size. Entrants can choose their own design and decoration but it must be in good taste.

Scarecrow guys will be judged on creativity, originality, skill, use of materials and anything else that catches the eye of the judges.

Results of the judging will be posted on November 8.
