More than £10,000 was raised for the lifeboat service at this year’s Thurso RNLI Summer Fayre.

The annual event at Scrabster harbour was officially opened by Mac Macgill, a senior manager at Dounreay. Among those taking part were Police Scotland, the Civil Nuclear Constabulary, the Ministry of Defence Police, HM Coastguard, Assynt Mountain Rescue Team, the Scottish Ambulance Service, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Thurso Rotary Club, NRS Dounreay, the Army Cadet Force, the Royal Navy and Pentland Model Boat Club.

There was also a woodturning display and Forss Young Farmers ran a “guess the number of balloons” competition. Thurso and District Pipe Band played on the quayside and Mina Mackay’s dancers put on a Highland dancing display.

Attractions, all manned by volunteer crew and committee members, included the ever-popular sale of local fish, the RNLI shop, a barbecue, teas and cakes, with “special guests” manning the kitchen.

RNLI Thurso press officer Ron Gunn said: “It was another very successful summer fayre and the public came out in force. Thanks to their generosity we took in just over £10,000.

“We would like to thank everyone who attended and took part, and special thanks go to NorthLink Ferries and Mackays car sales, Thurso, for their very generous raffle prizes.

“The RNLI survives on donations, and days like these allow crew members to continue to go to sea to save lives.”
