Lifeboat volunteers were called out on Monday night following a report from police that a boat was adrift near the entrance to the River Thurso.

The Thurso RNLI vessel The Taylors was launched at 10pm and began a search of the area. The drifting boat was spotted near the shore just east of the river mouth.

The RNLI's inflatable "Y" boat set off with two crew members on board and they were able to establish that no-one was on the vessel, which ended up ashore due to the high tide and a large swell.

Local coastguard teams located the boat and were able to secure it so it would not float away.

The Taylors returned to Scrabster and was refuelled ready for service at 10.35pm.

Coxswain Dougie Munro said: "It was important we found the boat to check there were no persons on board, and also a boat adrift in the sea – especially in the dark – is a hazard to other ships"
