A PLAN to improve the riverside and mall area in Thurso has been unveiled at the latest meeting of the local community council.

Retired architect James Campbell said the overall cost of the project would be £44,550. He described it as a “forward planning exercise” which could be carried out as and when money becomes available.

Mr Campbell said the project would involve the upgrading of paths, the planting of trees, improved drainage and the installation of interpretive signs at the upper mall and west bank sections of the riverside.

He explained the project would include a viewpoint and a pathway which would enable people to go up the river as far as the salmon pool.

Mr Campbell told Thurso Community Council the scheme would be done in stages and pointed out some parts would cost as little as £250 while the path to the salmon pool would be about £14,000.

Thurso Highland councillor John Rosie indicated £10,000 could be made available initially and pointed out the money would help attract additional funding. “I am confident we can achieve this,” stated Mr Rosie.

Community council chairman Bob Earnshaw gave his backing to the plan which would complement other schemes undertaken in the area in recent times. “I hope the finance for this project can be obtained,” he said.
