An all-female team from Rolls-Royce at Vulcan visited the P7 class at Pennyland Primary School in Thurso during the week of International Women in Engineering Day.

They talked about engineering as a career and set some STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) challenges.

Although the STEM resource kit was provided by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the group from Rolls-Royce included a nuclear engineer, a mechanical engineer, two instrument engineering apprentices and an electrical engineering apprentice.

The class was split into groups, with two teams tackling the challenge to build a ball run with the aim of having the ball remain on the run for the longest time possible, while two other teams built elastic band-powered cars to see who could achieve the farthest distance travelled.

The Vulcan team said the pupils had engaged well with the challenges, had asked some interesting questions and had given positive feedback.
