Parents at a Thurso primary school have helped purchase a long-lasting container to store the pupils’ outdoor toys. An official opening was held at Mount Pleasant Primary last week to thank the school’s parent council which fundraised for the storage unit.

Principal teacher Laura MacDonald said the parent council worked extremely hard to help raise £3850 to cover the cost of the new container, which was purchased from DR Alexander & Son in Reay.

The parents helped to organise a variety of events within the school to raise the money, including a sponsored walk and a Christmas fayre.

During the opening, the school’s six house captains - Aidan Wright, Emme Spence, Victoria Sutherland, Spencer Gunn, Sophie Bialasek and Anna Smith – were joined by Debbie Wood, chairwoman of the parent council, and Suzanne Urquhart, the school’s head teacher.

Mrs Wood said: “It was a lot of work but it was worth it for the benefit of the children. This should last a very long time – hopefully up to 25 years – and will benefit the next generation of children too.”

The pupils said they were really happy with the container and that there was more space for all their toys. House captain Aidan Wright said: “I think that the new container is very useful, considering the old one was made of wood, we now have a very durable metal one.”

Mrs MacDonald added: “We are so fortunate to have such a supportive parent council at Mount Pleasant Primary School and are extremely grateful for all their help with purchasing the new storage container. It will help to keep our playground toys safe and secure for many more years to come.”
