A CAITHNESS musician will be taking part in this year’s Hogmanay street party in Edinburgh.

Barry Gordon, who comes from Thurso, will be playing with funk band James Brown is Annie at the popular event.

The six-piece band will be performing just after the bells to bring in the start of the new year.

The invitation to take part in such a prestigious occasion is regarded by the Edinburgh-based band as a major coup as it will be the only unsigned act to get such a high billing.

James Brown is Annie will perform material from their forthcoming debut album, We’re A’ Mark Renton’s Bairns, to around 80,000 people. English indie-rock band The Vaccines and Glaswegian retro rockers Kassidy will also appear on the Waverley Stage.

The group has come a long way since forming in 2006, according to Gordon.

“Not so long ago, we were an all-instrumental trio struggling to get noticed. Now that we’ve grown in size, we’ve grown in stature too. In the last 12 months, we’ve been invited to play alongside those whose records we grew up listening to – the likes of Little Feat and the Average White Band. So being invited to play in front of our home crowd on Hogmanay – and to be the only Edinburgh-based band on the bill – is a rare honour indeed. We can’t wait to get the party started,” he said.

The band’s line-up is Barry Gordon on guitar; Jenny Dryden (vocals); Cat Myers (drums); Dougie Mathieson (bass); Eddie Miller (guitar
