A Thurso man pitched up with a sledgehammer after reaching the end of his tether with traffic issues near his home.

Robin Drayton Ayre brandished it as he stood in the middle of a road before striking it into the carriageway as a vehicle headed towards him shortly after midnight on August 21 last year, Wick Sheriff Court heard on Tuesday.

Fiscal David Barclay said: "The accused has been plagued with passing vehicle and motorist noise and parking nearby.

"This appears to have resulted from a combination of him becoming frustrated and possibly losing his good sense.

"There is nothing to suggest the accused was intending to harm any individual. He's shown his frustration in an inappropriate manner."

Ayre, of Bridgend, Thurso East, previously admitted threatening or abusive behaviour on Sir Georges Street and Millbank Road. Sentence was then deferred for good behaviour.

Sheriff Neil Wilson on Tuesday read a letter from the 56-year-old explaining the background to the offence.

Acknowledging his early plea and that he had not been in further trouble, the sheriff admonished Ayre.

He also ordered the sledgehammer to be forfeited.
