Thurso man fined at Wick court for passing counterfeit note

A Thurso man's visit to a local shop proved to be a costly one.

Raff McIntyre (28) paid for items with a dud £20 note, and a subsequent appearance at Wick Sheriff Court this week resulted in him being fined £200.

Fiscal Depute Grant McLennan said that the assistant at Nickel and Dime thought that the Bank of England note felt a bit “thick” but gave the accused change for his purchase of soft drinks.

Later, however, the assistant had a closer look at the note and concluded it was a fake.

McIntyre was identified from CCTV footage and he was later cautioned and charged by police officers.

The accused admitted the fraud which occurred on April 23, 2022.

Fining McIntyre, of Murkle Terrace, Thurso, Sheriff Neil Wilson said: "Passing a counterfeit note is a serious matter. It undermines public confidence in our currency."
