Thurso kids have stars in their eyes at school Oscars event
Primary 7 pupils at Mount Pleasant enjoyed a truly star-studded evening to mark the school’s end-of-year celebration and awards night.
The children, who will be moving up to Thurso High School after the summer, came dressed in glamorous Oscar-style attire with dresses, suits, and ties.
As they arrived, families and staff were welcomed by members of the Thurso and District Pipe Band, along with the Caithness Youth Pipe Band.
Photos captured pupils and their families arriving down the red carpets by Sandra Noble and then in front of a dazzling black-and-gold balloon arch, photographed by parent Deirdre Cameron. A big thank you was also given by the school to Luke Merchant, manager of the Thurso Co-op, who donated to the event.
Guests took their seats for the highlight of the evening – the premiere of six short films created by the children. Guided by special guests “Buddy, Charlie, Max and Milo Bear”, who “arrived from America” in May, each team produced a film, including the titles Top Bear; High School Musical Bears – A Bear Special; The Mystery Man; The Blokes – Bovril and Glory; Bears – A Brand New World and Octozilla. Teams introduced their creations before the audience, followed by the suspense-filled opening of golden envelopes to announce the ‘Oscars’, presented by P7 teacher Shona McNicol.
The night concluded with a photo and video retrospective of the pupils’ journey from P1 to P7, and a final opportunity for families to explore the films’ scenery, props, costumes, scripts, and displays.
Mrs McNicol said: “What a fantastic way for the children to celebrate the end of their primary school journey.
“Working together in teams, they demonstrated incredible dedication and creativity – planning, writing scripts, designing scenery, and crafting props and costumes. Their hard work culminated in the filming and editing of their own short films, which they proudly shared with families and staff. A truly collaborative and inspiring project to mark this important milestone.
“It was wonderful to see the children so motivated – and, most importantly, having fun.
“Their enthusiasm was infectious as they applied creativity and teamwork across every stage. The result? Outstanding films and performances – and awards that truly honoured each child’s effort and achievement.”
