Thurso High School staff 'very pleased' with pupils' SQA results success

A CAITHNESS school is “very pleased” with its pupils’ academic successes after this year’s SQA results were released.

Staff at Thurso High School said they were “proud” of the teens for their efforts to catch up on work during the Covid pandemic.

“Pupils from across senior phase have been working very hard this session catching up on missed work during the pandemic and this has been demonstrated in today’s set of results,” said Anne Nicoll, depute head teacher. “Special mentions go to those pupils who have overcome difficult circumstances but attained excellent results despite this, and to all pupils who worked hard to achieve at their level.”

Those S5 pupils with outstanding attainment at Higher included – Kirsty Henderson, Ava Mackay, Craig Matthews, Robert Stolde, Lexie Watson & Mykhailo Yatsiuta all achieving 5 As.

At National 5, outstanding attainment of S4 pupils with all 7 As included – Katie Donn, Isla Mackay, Shannon May, Aaron McLean, Sophie Miller, Katie Nuttall, Lois Omand & Caitlyn Watt and a further 14 pupils with 6 As.

“We would like to commend the hard work put in by pupils and staff that have made these results possible and wish every one of our pupils the best in the future,” added Ms Nicoll.

The school’s comments come after Highland Council said the wider results across the region showed an increase in the number of National 5 entries from the previous year – with 78 per cent of candidates achieving A-C grades.

A total of 1625 Highland pupils achieved five or more National 5 qualifications – nearly two per cent more than the previous year.

Some 67.4 per cent of S4 pupils also achieved a National 5 English award and 47.5 per cent achieved a National 5 Maths award. The latter is a slight decline on improvement made last year but, the council says, attainment remains above the four-year average by 2.5 per cent.

And 19 per cent of S5 pupils achieved five or more Higher awards (A-D pass), an increase of 1.7 per cent from last year. Furthermore, 4.8 per cent of S5 pupils achieved five ‘A’ grade Higher awards.
