A pupil at Thurso High school tested positive for the coronavirus at the start of the week, forcing a group of pupils to isolate.

However, Highland Council said that follow-up tests proved negative and that pupils and parents had been kept up to date.

A council spokeswoman said: "At the beginning of this week, a group of individuals were self-isolating as a precaution following a positive lateral flow device test result of a pupil at Thurso High School. Further testing of a PCR test has today returned a negative result."

PCR tests are mainly for people with symptoms and are sent to a lab to be checked while rapid lateral flow tests are for people who do not have symptoms. They give a result in 30 minutes using a device similar to a pregnancy test.

The spokeswoman added: "A letter was issued to update the school community. The Highland Council continues to work in partnership with NHS Highland Health Protection Team."

Meanwhile, a further five cases of Covid-19 have been diagnosed in the NHS Highland area, bringing the cumulative total for the region to 5185.

No new cases were recorded in the Western Isles, Shetland or the Orkneys.

Nationally there were a further 394 diagnoses in the latest 24-hour period.

No new deaths were recorded of people with a recent positive test of Covid-19.

A total of 70 people were in hospital with recently confirmed coronavirus. A total of 3,051,383 people have now received the first dose of the Covid vaccination and 1,704,388 have received their second dose.
