THE head teacher of Thurso High School shared stories of the resilience and success of pupils and the importance of mental wellbeing with councillors at an online education committee meeting.

On Thursday, Highland Council education committee members heard presentations from five head teachers from Highland schools which highlighted the work and success being delivered by staff and results achieved by young people.

The school has developed and implemented a comprehensive programme of support for its more vulnerable pupils to access.

Thurso High also offers the SQA National four and five awards in mental health and wellbeing to help address apparent increases in anxiety and depression and is looking to establish mental health ambassadors next month.

At the online meeting Ms Flavell said: "The most important thing [for raising achievement] is pupil wellbeing. This has to come first, as without it we can't have effective learning.

"A child that does not have good mental health or does not feel cared for is not able to work as effectively in the classroom.

"We've developed and implemented a comprehensive programme of support for our more vulnerable pupils."

Ms Flavell went on to talk in more detail about how this support programme works at a practical level in the school and spoke about the effectiveness of utilising a "holistic approach" to learning.
