A SERIES of cooking workshops will be held this summer as part of Thurso Grows, the new project from Thurso Community Development Trust funded by the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund.

The first of these, Cooking on a Budget, promises low-cost cooking to save money while also helping to cut down on food waste. It will take place this Saturday from 11am to 12.30pm at Thurso Youth Club.

Other workshops throughout the summer include Making the Most of Leftovers, Making Food Go Further and Cooking with Seasonal Food.

Booking is essential. All workshops can be booked on the website.

Thurso Grows has been making great progress since starting in April. The team are awaiting delivery of their Polycrub (a polytunnel/greenhouse hybrid designed to withstand strong winds) and, with the help of volunteers in the community garden, are now harvesting early crops while watching others shoot up.

The project seeks to educate the community on the small actions that can be taken to mitigate against climate change. Thurso Grows regularly shares updates on social media encouraging Meat Free Monday and Waste Free Wednesday, knowing that cutting down on food waste is essential to meet the climate emergency which has now been declared.

We’ve worked really hard getting the garden ready and are excited to be reaching out with the cooking workshops.

Thurso Grows recently held an open day at the garden and there was a clear demand for advice on composting, so two workshops will also be held on how to create a worm bin composter and using pallets to recycle in to a compost bay. Full details of the workshops can be found on the website.

Ann Brock, Thurso Grows project co-ordinator, said: “We’ve worked really hard over the past couple of months getting the garden ready and are excited to be reaching out further now with the cooking workshops.

“We’re all looking to save a few pounds when it comes to grocery shopping and cooking with local, seasonal produce is at the top of the wish list to impact against climate change. The workshops are free of charge and we hope to see lots of people attending.”
