Thurso gets hooked to faster broadband

THURSO is one of six towns in the far north to have access to faster broadband courtesy of a multimillion pound investment from BT.

The network operator recently invested £8milion in a new fibre transmission link from Inverness to the northern Highlands and Islands giving vastly increased Internet speeds. Homes and businesses in Alness, Dingwall, Invergordon, Kirkwall, Tain and Thurso are now benefiting from faster broadband over copper lines as part of the roll-out of BT’s next generation broadband service.

The investment has delivered download speeds of up to 20 megabits per second (Mbps) – more than double the fastest speed previously available.

Exchanges at Dingwall, Kirkwall, Tain and Thurso have also been upgraded to the latest generation Ethernet network which offers businesses and public sector organisations major improvements in communications at the same time as significantly reducing costs.
