ONE of the stalwarts of Thurso Gala is unsure about her future with the body which runs the event.

Doreen Macleod, chairwoman of Thurso Town Improvements Association, told the Caithness Courier she will continue in her role until the annual general meeting in January.

"I am undecided about continuing after that. It is just the lack of help, support and enthusiasm which is making me consider my position," said Mrs Macleod, who revealed if she steps down as chair she will leave the association completely.

She was speaking at the end of this year’s gala which was a success although takings and attendances were generally down on 2011.

On the opening night £2582.42 was raised and while that figure is expected to rise slightly it is £1600 less than last year.

"Everybody that came to events really enjoyed themselves. There were no complaints. People mucked in and helped but we do need more volunteers and will be having a public meeting in September prior to our AGM in a bid to try and remedy the situation," said Mrs Macleod.

She said activities held over the weekend went well and enjoyed good weather.

It’s a Knockout, which was staged at the Dammies, attracted two teams whereas in the past it had as many as six.

"It is the second year the number of teams has dropped. Those taking part had fantastic fun but a few more teams would have absolutely made it. We do not plan to hold It’s a Knockout again," added Mrs Macleod.

"A few things we ran were really popular while others took a drop but then there was so much on this year as well which had an impact."

Mrs Macleod said Fun at the Fire Station on Sunday went down very well while the baby show proved as popular as ever.

As previously reported, the opening night was a success but there were just three floats – and only one from Thurso – while the crowd was smaller than usual.

"I would like to thank everybody who supported us and helped in any way. The future of the gala is looking more promising as we have managed to get some more volunteers and will be holding a public meeting. ‘on Septemer 21 in the Royal Hotel.

"I am undecided about my own future but will continue until the AGM," added Mrs Macleod.
