Thurso's food waste minimisation and community growing project is giving local people a chance to join a series of online workshop sessions starting next month.

There will be tips for anyone seeking to save money on their food shopping, as well as ideas on how to get more vegetables into your diet.

The four-part online workshop is being presented by Thurso Grows from Thursday, September 10 (at 7pm), on the theme of Making Food Go Further.

The sessions are designed to help people find ways to reduce food waste, which is the third largest contributor to greenhouse gases. It has been calculated that the average household loses £437 a year in food waste, and much of this is avoidable.

Making Food Go Further will look at the food people throw away and how they can reuse it to make other meals, as well as covering food storage and food composting. There will be a cooking section where meal bags will be delivered to participants the day before the workshops and the group will cook together.

Project co-ordinator Ann Brock said: “These workshops will be ideal for anyone who is looking to save money on their food shop. We will also be discussing some hints and tricks for getting more vegetables in your meals – great if you have fussy kids who aren’t keen on eating their greens.”

The workshops are free as a result of funding from the Scottish Government's Climate Challenge Fund and are part of Thurso Community Development Trust.

Anyone interested in getting involved should email ThursoGrows@ThursoCDT.co.uk or check out the event at www.facebook.com/ThursoGrows
