A drugs investigation in Thurso features in the opening episode of a new TV series about police work in the north of Scotland.

The five-part BBC documentary series Highland Cops focuses on Police Scotland’s Highlands and Islands division.

One of the cases covered in the first programme shows how a suspicious package, smelling strongly of cannabis, has been intercepted in the post in Thurso. It falls to Sergeant Andy McKay and his team to investigate.

Highland Cops was shown on BBC Scotland on Sunday and is repeated on BBC Two on Tuesday (9pm-10pm). It is available on the BBC iPlayer.

In the same episode, bushcraft expert Finn Creaney is reported missing in the wilds of Sutherland and wildlife officer Dan Sutherland is on the trail of deer poachers, while anti-social driving catches the attention of officers in Inverness.

Covering 12,000 square miles, Police Scotland’s Highlands and Islands division is Britain’s biggest beat.

Highland Cops is a co-commission for BBC Scotland and BBC Two, produced by Firecrest Films.

BBC Scotland commissioning executive David Harron said: “The series shows a huge variety of cases, from drug busts and assaults in urban centres as well as wildlife and other crimes which are particular to this spectacular beat.”
