A Thurso couple have signed up to take part in the annual WildHearts WolfTrek, an outdoor challenge taking place in the Highlands August 6th, organised by the WildHearts charity.

Graham and Carole Henderson will be taking part in the 17-mile Midnight March as a unique way of marking their silver wedding anniversary, which they celebrate this year.

Beginning in Forres on the Moray Coast, the WolfTrek route has been designed to take participants through a microcosm of Highland wilderness, packed with diverse terrain, landscapes and wildlife. Uniquely, participants will have the added thrill of crossing the Dava Moor as night falls, to arrive on the shore of Lochindorb, home to the spooky ruined castle of the medieval tyrant Alexander Stewart, the Earl of Buchan, known as the Wolf of Badenoch

The couple, who both recently turned 50, are excited about getting fitter and achieving this challenging but attainable goal.

They have never taken on such an event before and have been preparing by tackling longer and longer training walks at home

"I hadn’t realised just how little I have really explored of my home county, but I’m savouring the chance to see some of the beautiful landscapes in Caithness", said Graham. "I think I have caught the walking bug and am already feeling the benefits.

"We’re excited about discovering the WolfTrek route too. My wife, Carole, is originally from Moray and part of the appeal of signing up to WolfTrek was the location."

The charity side of the walk also appealed to the couple who have suggested to family and friends that they dispense with the usual silver anniversary gifts and instead sponsor them for talking part in the event.

WildHearts provide micro-loans and business training to people living in destitution in the developing world, enabling them to work their own way out of poverty.

Once one WildHearts micro-client repays their loan, that money is then lent out to another member of their community.

WildHearts founder Mick Jackson is urging other local teams to register for the event too.

"The WolfTrek is a fantastic opportunity to have an adventure and explore the spectacular wilderness Scotland has to offer.

"It took us months to create the route as it does not exist on any map. As a result it is a secret that only members of the ‘WolfPack’ discover. Moreover the WolfTrek can only take place one weekend a year due to the unique conservational sensitivities of the area.

"So far we’ve had teams from the US, Belgium and Egypt sign up, but there is always a strong northern contingent at the event, so I would urge anyone interested to follow Graham and Carole’s example and register now."
