A Thurso Highland councillor has hit out at the "unbelievable" delay in demolishing a redundant watersports base in Thurso.

Pentland Canoe Club was forced to evacuate its long-time base in January last year following a fierce storm which undermined a section of the concrete walkway on the town's esplanade adjoining the hut.

The delay in Highland Council levelling the hut is frustrating local councillor Ron Gunn.

Speaking at last week's Thurso Community Council meeting, he said: "I've been banging my head against the wall to get the hut demolished. It's unbelievable the speed Highland Council has been moving on it.

"They've assured me they are going through the different stages but they have the building warrant and have appointed a contractor.

"It's not a big job and money has been allocated so why they're dragging their feet, I don't know."

The club, meanwhile, has relocated its base to Scrabster.

A council spokesperson said: "The work was awarded to a contractor on May 7 and we have just had confirmation that the starting date for this job will be the week beginning June 5."
