Thurso Community Development Trust’s first series of Cook and Learn sessions have gone down a treat – with more being planned.

Beginning at the start of October, the free workshops allowed people to learn about some of the basics of cooking and gain confidence in the kitchen. They learned skills such as knife work, working with fresh ingredients and how to make a small set of dishes.

Those who attended all four workshops received a cooking kit worth £50 to help continue their culinary journey.

Dishes included homemade pizza with a bread dough base, carrot and lentil soup made from scratch with freshly made flatbreads, mini-quiches with homemade pastry, and spaghetti bolognese with fresh handmade pasta.

Food coordinator Sara-Jane Hardy said: “It has been an absolute treat getting to work with such a lovely bunch who were all so passionate about learning to cook, and it made me so proud to see them succeed.”

She added that those who attended were delighted with the experience and greatly enjoyed the environment and sense of teamwork, alongside the practical side of the workshops.

The sessions were held in the Thurso Youth Club kitchen.

The Cook and Learn workshops have been renewed for a second set this month to meet demand, and are already fully booked up.

The workshops have been funded by the National Lottery.
