Christmas Day meals are to be delivered to people in the Thurso area who would otherwise face the prospect of spending the day alone or be prevented from cooking for themselves by mobility problems or other issues.

The festive treat is being laid on by Thurso Community Development Trust (TCDT) in its latest Community Christmas.

The trust has in the past organised in-person Christmas meal events but for a second year the meals will be delivered because of Covid-19.

That won't mean a shortage of Christmas cheer, though, with volunteers on the day set to embrace the festivities by dressing up and having a chat at the door.

The meals are free of charge but people receiving one can make a donation if they choose. They can be booked by calling 01847 867310, via email to community@thursocdt.co.uk or by contacting Thurso Community Development Trust on Facebook via private message.

The meal will consist of three courses, with soup for a starter; turkey, ham and all the trimmings for a main course; and a selection of desserts, including sticky toffee pudding, pavlova, cheesecake and Christmas pudding. Those booking can have more than one dessert if they like.

The meals are delivered around noon to 1pm on December 25. Bookings can be from within Thurso or the immediate surrounding area.

TCDT development manager Joan Lawrie said: “The Thurso Community Christmas is a very special event for us now. This is the fifth year of running it and, while we still aren’t in a position to bring everyone together on Christmas Day, being able to deliver the meals means a lot to both us and the people who are receiving them.

"It really is a highlight of the year to be able to provide meals to so many people. We will carry on taking bookings right up to Christmas Eve and anyone who would like a meal is more than welcome.

"Particularly over this year and last year we've received calls from family members who are away from Thurso to book in folk here as plans have changed due to Covid. We welcome anyone who is suddenly feeling stuck, so please give us a call and we can arrange a Christmas meal.”
