Thurso cinema fans are voting with their feet
The Thurso Cinema opened its doors on Friday afternoon as a sell-out audience watched The Dark Knight Rises, the final film in the new Batman trilogy.
Customers continued to pour in over the weekend with capacity crowds also reported for its other three movies.
Manager Eileen Mullins said the past few days had surpassed all expectations but proved how big a demand existed in the county for the cinema.
“The response we have received since opening on Friday has been overwhelming,” she said.
“Every day since opening we have had people queuing out the door to see one of our films. The smell of popcorn has filled the building and everyone who has come in has had a smile on their face.
“Sunday has been our busiest day so far but every day we have sold out for at least one of our films. It speaks for itself how delighted people are to see a cinema back and they are voting with their feet.”
The Ormlie Road cinema is being run by West Lothian entrepreneur Rob Arthur who has 30 years’ experience in the cinema industry. He plans to install the latest digital technology and 3D equipment over the next few months to enable it to screen live opera, ballet, cultural and sporting events in 2D and 3D.
He also hopes to convert the existing bowling alley at the complex into more screens.
Mr Arthur said the support makes him believe the cinema can become a successful and growing business.
“Embracing social media channels – particularly Facebook – has meant that we have been able to communicate with people instantly and effectively and keep everyone up to date with the cinema’s progress,” he said.
“Regular posts have seen the number of views matching the total population of Caithness – this shows just how engaged and excited residents are about the reopening of their cinema.
“We want it to become a place at the heart of the community.”
