A Thurso artist has raised more than £3600 for good causes after raffling off his painting of the Celtic football manager.

Davie Greig arranged for the portrait to be signed by Ange Postecoglou, the Greek-Australian who led the Glasgow club to the Scottish Premiership title in his first season in charge.

The raffle generated a total of £3615 which has now been split equally between three charities chosen by Davie and his family. They are Beat, the eating disorder charity, Macmillan Cancer Support and John O'Groats Development Trust's playpark project.

"There was a tremendous response by so many people wanting to give generously during tough times to three great causes," said Davie, who works offshore.

"A massive thank-you needs to go to friends, family, small businesses, pubs and clubs in Caithness and beyond who also worked really hard to sell tickets.

"Thanks also to the crew on board Gryphon Alpha FPSO, my place of work, who bought tickets and helped spread the word across the country."

Last year Davie's signed painting of former football manager Sir Alex Ferguson raised £3000 for local Macmillan Cancer Support nurses and Caithness Foodbank, with the money divided equally.

That came about after businessman Gary Reid, of Thurso-based Reids Bakery, sent Davie's painting to the former Manchester United boss in the hope that he would autograph it. The artwork shows "Fergie" during his time as Aberdeen boss, holding aloft the European Cup-Winners' Cup which the Dons won in 1983.

Sir Alex gave Gary a call, saying that he liked the picture and would be happy to sign it and dispatch it back to Caithness.

Davie's latest work was signed by Ange Postecoglou outside Celtic Park when his friend Leon Forbes managed to track down the manager after a game.
