Thurso artist goes 'under the sea' for charity painting

A current exhibition of artworks in Thurso includes a vibrant underwater scene that is up for raffle with proceeds going to a local trust.

Elaine Rapson-Grant donated the 26 x 12 inch acrylic on canvas painting called An Ocean’s Secrets to Thurso Community Development Trust (TCDT) for its funds.

"It’s a very bright underworld of fantasy painted to transport the viewer to a much calmer place," said Elaine, who is a well-known figure on the Thurso art scene.

"Sometimes in this world we do not appear to be seeing all that is taking place right before our eyes, and I have represented this with the hidden mermaid. Now see the world through her eyes – it’s colourful, magical and calm.

"She watches safely out of sight as her world unfolds above her. But she is not looking at the marine life instead she stares at the viewer of the painting inviting them into her fantasy world. A world without Covid allowing the viewer to completely relax, stop and take a breath. Losing themselves in my fantasy."

Her painting is part of a show collated by Caithness Artists for TCDT that includes work by Sheelagh Paterson, Ian Ritchie, Jane MacRae, Julie Marrit, Penny Irvine, Ian Pearson and others. The various artworks are being displayed in numerous shops throughout Thurso with details available on TCDT's website or on its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ThursoCDT

An Ocean’s Secrets is on show in the window of The Kiln Store on Traill Street until September 11 and raffle tickets can be purchased online at www.thursocdt.co.uk/buy/elaine-rapson-artwork-raffle

Proceeds from the raffle will support TCDT in its work.

Elaine shared some final words on her underwater odyssey, saying: "If I am having a bad day, I look at her and she makes me feel so much better and positive. For me that’s what I want my art to be all about."
