The Northern Pilgrims’ Way needs you – plans to erect copies of Pictish stones at original sites

The Northern Pilgrims’ Way Group (NPWG) is appealing for new members, and trustees to help it on its historic mission.

The NPWG, which includes the Northern Saints Trails, was established to highlight local heritage, encourage slow tourism in the north Highlands and bring benefits to local businesses and communities.

The Northern Saints Trails provides opportunities to follow circular routes visiting sites associated with early Christianity in Caithness. Although designed principally for drivers and cyclists, there are many sections which could be easily walked.

The NPWG follows the medieval pilgrimage route between the shrines of St Duthac in Tain and St Magnus in Kirkwall. It offers varied walking on three braids, one of which follows the John O'Groats Trail for most of the way, and two inland routes. Most stages offer excellent day hikes for those who don't want to tackle the entire pilgrimage walk.

Jane Coll, NPWG secretary, said: "Although the basics are in place, we need to develop further in order to make the group a special experience for all. Better signage and more interpretive panels are just some ideas for improvement. We are open to suggestions.

"One very exciting project already in the pipeline is the reconstruction of the Skinnet and Ulbster Stones. These will be placed close to their original sites. All of this needs funding though."
