Three heraldic shields have been installed in the garden of remembrance at Wick Town Hall ahead of this weekend's coronation.

The intricately detailed designs were created by heraldic craftsman Alex Paterson using oil paint on 4ft high pieces of plywood.

One depicts the cypher of King Charles III beneath the Scottish crown. It is flanked by a St Andrew's Cross and the Royal Banner of the Royal Arms of Scotland, also known as the Lion Rampant.

Mr Paterson, who has been a signwriter for more than 60 years, is chairman of the Wick, Canisbay and Latheron branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland and he produced the shields as a community project.

They were installed on Wednesday morning by Willie Watt, Vice-Lieutenant of Caithness.

Mr Watt said: "Alex is pretty unique in today's terms. When computers rule, Alex still roams with freehand and brush and you can see his unbelievable talents – talents that may never be replaced.

"The colour it has added to the garden of remembrance, and in celebration of the whole coronation, is just amazing. It is credit to him that he continues to be such a very active volunteer, keeping the whole town spick and span.

"From the lieutenancy point of view, we're the Royal Burgh of Wick and we just wanted to see some colour on what is a momentous occasion for King Charles."

The Legion branch will be having a coronation party at 4pm on Saturday at its premises at Mackenzie House in Coach Road, Wick.
