The parents of Wick High School (WHS) pupils were sent a letter from Highland Council's education executive chief officer today thanking them for rising to the "challenges and pressures" of lockdown.

The letter comes after another was sent out on Tuesday to reassure parents and guardians after a pupil tested positive for Covid-19 at the school.

Ahead of the forthcoming summer break, Nicky Grant said in today's letter that it can be a period that encompasses a "renewed sense of freedom and invigoration".

She continued: "Our children and young people have continued to thrive this year, and that would not have been possible without your constant care, support and encouragement. Thank you.

"It has been a year like no other, and lockdown will have brought a variety of challenges and pressures to households across Highland. However, our communities have pulled together, and we hope you have felt the benefit of this throughout the year."

She talked about how Highland communities have a "unique talent for looking after each other" and this tradition shines through in their children and young people who have continued to "step up and support each other as they faced yet more challenges and change this year".

Ms Grant said that the summer break will give families the opportunity "to recharge and enjoy quality time together".

"We wish your family a safe and happy holiday and look forward to welcoming our children and young people back to educational settings in August. There is much to capitalise on in the new session, and it is with hope and optimism that we begin to plan for this.

"Our learners deserve the very best, and with you supporting them and working with us, that is what they will get. Please enjoy making many happy memories with your family this summer and know that we will be eager to welcome everyone back and hear all about the adventures and experiences you have enjoyed together."

Another letter was penned by Ms Grant for all Highland pupils, in which she extolled their virtues of "team spirit, understanding and willingness" to help each other that was "nothing short of fantastic". The children were informed of a Highland Council initiative called Summer of Hope which encourages them to get involved in a variety of free activities over the break.

WHS sent its own message thanking everyone associated with it for their hard work over the year: "It has been incredibly challenging for all but we hope that the worst is behind us and that when we return to school in August we will be in a position to reinstate some of the aspects of the school that we have lost during the pandemic."
