THE first of two pipelines constructed by Subsea 7 at its Caithness site has been successfully launched.

The five-kilometre pipeline left Sinclair’s Bay late on Thursday night and is being transported to the Montrose oil field which is 130 miles east of Aberdeen. It is expected to take 35 hours to complete the journey. The second pipeline is due to be launched next week.

The two lead tugs involved in the project are the Far Sapphire and the Far Scorpion which are based in Norway. The trail tug was the BB Worker from Bergen while the Skandi 7 – Subsea 7’s own research and supply vessel – was also involved along with other support vessels.

“The weather was good for the launch of the first pipeline and everything went really well. It was the first of two 10-kilometre tie-back pipelines for the Montrose field,” said Subsea 7 site manager Willie Watt.

The company has work which will take it through to next year, added Mr Watt.
