Submit meter readings by March 31st, urges local MP

Far north MP Jamie Stone urges people to submit meter readings to their electricity and gas providers by March 31 to avoid paying the new higher rates on energy used before April 1.

The price cap for default tariff customers will increase on April 1 from £1277 to £1971 per year – an increase of £693, or 54 per cent. Prepayment customers will see an even sharper increase of £708, taking the cap from £1309 to £2017.

Mr Stone, the Liberal Democrat MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, is now calling on households to make sure they are charged at the lower rate on gas and electricity used up until March 31.

He said: “To avoid overpaying on your energy bills, submit an up-to-date reading to your electricity provider, and your gas supplier if you have one, on 31st March. This will ensure that you are only charged the higher rate on energy you use from the 1st April onwards.

“I am acutely aware that these price hikes are unmanageable for many people. Liberal Democrats at Westminster and Holyrood are doing all that we can to push for more government support. In the meantime, I urge everyone in Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross to make sure they submit their meter reading on 31st March.”
