AN assurance has been given to local MSP Rob Gibson over the future of the Dunbar Hospital in Thurso.

Scottish health secretary Nicola Sturgeon told the Caithness, Sutherland and Ross MSP that any changes would have to improve the quality of care for patients.

She also stressed all stakeholders and the wider public would have to be consulted on the proposals.

Ms Sturgeon went on to say if the plans are deemed to constitute major service change, the board would be required to carry out a full public consultation in line with government guidance. Any decision taken by the board would then be subject to approval by ministers.

Mr Gibson welcomed the health secretary’s reply to his question about the future of key services at the Dunbar.

“I welcome the response. Nicola Sturgeon made it clear that she will be monitoring the proposals closely and does not want to see a diminution of services at the Dunbar.

“It is important that there is transparency from NHS Highland when they make their proposals known. I shall continue to monitor the situation closely and make sure that the public and other interested parties have their views and suggestions listened to.”

The SNP MSP added: “I hope NHS Highland will put forward thoughtful and positive proposals which will better serve the communities of west Caithness and north Sutherland.”
