Students team up with mission in fishy fundraiser
NORTH Highland College UHI is aiming to help a local charity raise some money and at the same time let its students gain valuable experience.
Hospitality students at the college’s Flagstones Restaurant will be combining their efforts with the crew of local fishing boat the Boy Andrew and the Fishermen’s Mission in Scrabster to raise money for the seafarers’ charity.
Next Wednesday and Thursday the students will go to the mission, cook in its kitchen and provide lunch to its customers using a box of fish caught and donated by the Boy Andrew.
Colin Mackay, mission superintendent, said: “The Boy Andrew is giving the mission a box of fish. We thought it would be nice to offer it to the college asking if they would like to use it to assist the students in their training.
“We’ve had the students in this week as well to see the market and to let them see how to choose the best fish. We’ve just had a load of fish in and a big catch of prawns from the Boy Andrew’s sister vessel, Opportune.”
Mr Mackay said the students were going to get a proper tour of the market to show them how to select quality fish and explain all the goings on, which would hopefully help them in the future.
“The students will be cooking in the mission, which will be a change for them. We’ll see how much money is raised. The prices for the food will be the same as they would be at the college,” he said. “We hope the students will gain experience along the way, learning where fish comes from, how it’s caught and how to prepare it.”
